Last year, TBD made the trek to beautiful Steamboat Springs for SBT GRVL. I excitedly signed up, only to be forced to defer my entry to 2024. While it was incredibly disappointing at the time, it gave me a year to look forward to the event and it was certainly worth the wait.

I joined my fellow red course riders at the start line and promptly took off at 6:30 am. What began as a slow and cold neutral start, quickly changed the moment we hit that first patch of dirt. The first 15 miles flew by as the field dashed past the first aid station. After a few short but punchy climbs, the field began to splinter, and we each settled into our rhythm. My goals for SBT were simple - pace myself well and don't die on the hills. That goal was tested at mile 28. The climb, while stunningly beautiful, felt never-ending. I dug deep, determined to catch up with the group I had been keeping pace with all morning. The next segment was by far the highlight of my day - an incredibly fast downhill stretch, followed by another long, breathtaking climb. At the end of the climb was a final aid station, signaling that my time in Routt County was drawing to a close. After a quick refuel and pickleback, I was back in the saddle and on to the final stretch.

The last 8 miles were a bit of beautiful chaos: cows blocking the road, sudden potholes, loose rocks flying in all directions, and even ambulances blocking the route. Despite the obstacles, I pushed myself to the very end. In the end, I crossed the line in high spirits and proud of the outcome. The Champagne Gravel is not an exaggeration and I finally understand the hype.
