Our Favorite Rides: Buffalo Creek, Denver
In Denver, we experience a not terribly well-known phenomenon called Fake Spring. Fake Spring often happens at least twice - it’s beautiful, sunny, and warm… and then a few days later it snows. Thus, our local mountain bike trails may come close to being rideable in April only to be covered in a foot of snow again. We’re daydreaming about riding our favorite loops and in that spirit we present: Buffalo Creek, one of our Favorite Rides.
Why do we love mountain biking at Buff Creek? So many reasons. Let me make you a list!
Proximity - about an hour from central Denver
Variety - hours of riding is available
Difficulty - varied, but mostly on the less technical side, which is perfect for us aerobically fit but not smashing rocks type of folks
Views - scarred by a forest fire years ago, the vistas are expansive and the contrast of the still burned trees against blue Colorado skies is pretty magical
It’s so Denver - at the parking lot there are snacks, extra helmets, etc., donated by local cyclists
There are tons of different rides to do at Buff Creek but our favorite involves Nice Kitty, a brief time on the Colorado Trail, followed by Baldy and Sandy Wash. There’s a decent amount of climbing, but it’s not a leg or lung burner, which makes it a great place to take out of town visitors who aren’t acclimated. And did I mention the views?
