TBD Race Calendar: May 2018
At times we get so busy in the New York City race routine that we hardly notice a month has passed. And April was certainly a busy month of racing and adventure as we traveled North to Vermont for Rasputitsa, weekday racing kicked off at Floyd Bennett Field and there were any number of additional local races in Central and Prospect Parks. But between a packed April calendar and the lead into the CRCA Zach Koop Memorial Criterium at Orchard Beach we completely forgot that a new month of racing got underway as the calendar ticked over to May. With that in mind we have a slightly tardy look at May racing on the TBD Race Calendar. As always if we're missing anything just drop us a note and we'll make sure to add it.
Bear Mountain Classic - the biggest USAC race of the month takes place this coming weekend at Harriman State Park where a number of New York and New Jersey Road Race State Championships will be awarded on the always challenging course at Bear Mountain. With a tough climb up Tiorati and plenty of rollers elsewhere, but a downhill sprint finish it is always tough to predict how races at Bear will play out. But for anyone looking for a shot at a State Championship jersey you have to be on the start line on Saturday. If you're curious what CRCA is all about there is plenty of related content in the TBD Journal archives under the CRCA tag.
Killington Stage Race - anyone taking at shot at Bear Mountain likely has their eye on the Killington Stage Race at the end of the month. With three days of racing over Memorial Day Weekend, KSR is a staple of the East Coast calendar and one of just a handful of top tier stage races left (along with GMSR at the end of the summer). It may not be for the sprinters and criterium racers who will likely stay local for the next race on our list, but those more vertically inclined should definitely consider KSR.
Tour of Somerville - 2018 is a special year for the Tour of Somerville as it is the 75th edition of the race and there is a new format coming to the weekend on Sunday night as the race hosts sprint drag races in downtown Somerville. Bound Brook will fill out a busy weekend of racing on Saturday and in some ways is actually our preferred race of the weekend with a fun course and none of the Memorial Day traffic to get back into the city.
Outside of these big races there are a few local races including CRCA Club Series Race #5, the usual assortment of Tuesday and Thursday racing at Floyd Bennett Field, Wednesdays on the track at Kissena and GFNY on May 20th. A bit further afield there is also the 7th Annual CCNS Kermis in Hartford on Friday the 18th (good luck with that traffic leaving the city!), the Wilmington Grand Prix the following day, and the Cyclonauts Criterium on May 26th in Northern CT.
